You see a lot of people that call themselves agnostics. A lot of these people, i think are just trying to avoid the whole social stigma that goes along with being an atheist and don't enen truly know what the word entails. I'm going to be upfront, and say that I'm a proud atheist. That being said, i don't toss the title around just to piss people off. And if it does come up i usually get hounded by conservatives for believing the way i do. Not the other way around. I've learned to put up with it, and debate with the people that are so inclined. They end up getting mad because IM going to hell. Why so glum chum? your seat in heaven is secure? Don't worry about mine. So with all this irritation, it's no wonder people these days don't want to fess up to being a non-believer. If they don't want to step on anyone's toes they'll end up calling themselves an agnostic, or worse hide their beliefs and not talk about them.
The way i've always thought about it, atheists and agnostics can go hand-in-hand, though not interchangable, they are both negative answers to two entirely different questions. Agnosticism is the answer to the question "Can anyone prove in the existance of an omnipitant/omnicient diety?" Their answer...no. Atheism's question is "Does an omnipitant/omnicient diety exist?". Our answer...no. I'm 99% sure that God is a fairy tale. I know that it can never be proven one way or another. Which in a sense, makes me part agnostic as well as atheist.
I look at it this way. Can anyone prove that magic invisible fairies live in your brain and tell you what to do? no, and nobody can disprove that story either. However, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that i don't believe that this is true. It's funny, because if somebody actually believed this, they'd probably end up in a nuthouse. Yet, it's a very similar idea to the belief in god.
To sum this all up. I believe many atheists use agnosticism as training wheels before they make it all the way to atheism. In my opinion, you can be both but once you've made your way to Atheism you should just call yourself an atheist. Most people don't understand that agnosticism and atheism answer completly different questions. And even if you piss people off, you should be open about what you believe in.
Thats it, to any christians or people that disagree. Feel free to comment me, or hate me...i need things to write about. If your lucky you just might be another eggshell mind for my soup.
